What is a Nail Fungus?
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails. Also known as tinea unguium, it is a common condition that usually begins as a yellow or whitish spot under the tips of the affected toe or finger nails.

As the infection worsens, it penetrates the nail and surrounding tissue causing severe thickening and brittleness of the nails.

Causes and Symptoms of Nail Fungus
Onychomycosis can be caused by several different fungal organisms, the most common being dermatophyte. Molds and yeast have also been known to cause nail infections. Transmission between individuals through skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a fungal infection is also possible. Athlete's foot and ringworm are two of the more common examples of this.

While Fungal nail infections can develop in people of any age group, it's more commonly found in older adults.

Some of the symptoms of nail fungus are:
- Thickening of the nails.
- Brittle nails.
- Distortion of the shape of the nail.
- Whitish or yellowish discoloration.
- Foul odor.
- Darkening under the nail (caused by debris buildup).

While nail fungus can affect the fingernails, it's much more common in toenails.

Treat Nail Fungus with Laser Genesis
Laser Genesis uses a non ablative laser to treat nail fungus. A non ablative laser penetrates and heats the underlying layers of skin, leaving the outer or top layer unharmed. Ablative lasers on the other hand, remove the top layer of the skin.

The wavelength of light produced by the Genesis Laser kills the active fungus. It also stimulates the immune system and encourages the production of new collagen.
