Summer is fast approaching, and clients at Nulook Medspa, located in Toronto, often ask us if their skin care regimen should change with the seasons. The answer is yes. The reason for this is skin exposed to the heat, humidity and strong sunlight of summer needs different care from skin exposed to the dry, cold and weaker sunlight of winter. Here are some tips for summer skin care:

Use Sunscreen
Though some time in the sun is healthy and even helps the body manufacture vitamin D, too much sun is bad for skin. This is because the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause burning and damage that can lead to aged, leathery skin, unsightly lesions and even skin cancer. At Nulook Medspa in Toronto, we recommend using the TiZO3 Facial Mineral Sunscreen, a zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sunscreen that’s free of chemical sunscreen filters and is especially good for sensitive skin. Another good thing about TiZO3 Facial Mineral Sunscreen is it has an SPF of 40. It is recommended to use an SPF of 30 and above for the summer.

Use Light Moisturizer
We recommend going lightly on moisturizers and cleansers in summer. At night, apply a light moisturizer after showering. Individuals with oily skin should still moisturize; choose a moisturizer that is water based.

Exfoliate
Exfoliation is just a word for removing dead, dry skin cells from the very top layer of the epidermis. Summer is the best time to do this, especially if the skin is oily. Exfoliation not only removes old skin and dirt but stimulates the body to produce fresh skin cells.

Don’t Overdo It in the Shower
It is counterintuitive, but taking long baths or showers actually dries out the skin and can even put a person at risk for eczema. Four or five minutes in the shower is an optimum time, and the water should not be too hot.

Go out and enjoy the beautiful weather, but make sure to protect your skin and have a proper skin care routine.
