Chronic headaches occur when a patient experiences more days with headaches than days without headaches. While tension headaches are the most common type of chronic daily headache, migraines and cluster headaches are also common. At Nulook Medspa, in Toronto, we want to emphasize the importance of prioritizing mental and physical health and wellbeing, especially during stressful times. In times with limited access to professional treatment, at-home treatment methods can be used to combat chronic headaches.

Stay Hydrated
On average, we do not drink enough water every day, and that alone can cause headaches. Fluid loss due to dehydration causes the brain to contract, but rehydration can relieve a headache in as quick as 30 minutes. Drinking water regularly can even reduce the severity of headaches and migraines triggered by causes other than dehydration. It may seem too simple, but sipping water can actually act as a headache reliever, and studies have shown that more water helps with the duration and severity of migraine attacks and headaches.

Increase Your Magnesium Intake
Diet as a whole can have a major impact on headache severity and frequency. Increasing your magnesium intake or your intake of vitamin B-complex can help with chronic headaches. Magnesium can serve as a successful headache medication, even when compared to painkillers. People who suffer from severe headaches such as migraines often have low magnesium levels.

Topical Peppermint Essential Oil
Studies have shown that massaging peppermint oil into the temples and forehead is an effective method in relieving tension headaches. Be cautious to look for a pure form of the essential oil; chemicals in perfumes can cause or worsen headaches if perfumes are used instead of pure oils.

Manage Your Stress
Stress and anxiety can cause or worsen headaches. Regardless of your preferred method of stress relief, find a healthy outlet to keep your stress at bay. Keep in mind that the current situation is temporary. We, at Nulook Medspa in Toronto, will reopen as soon as possible and look forward to seeing you. During this time, you can still contact us if you have any questions. In the meantime, remember to take care of yourself: your body, mind, and soul.
